Charleston Indoor activities? Lowcountry visitors would be advised to have a few in their back pocket for the warm months! With summer average temperatures pushing 90F, and humidity of 80% or greater, having an indoor Plan B is always advisable. Fortunately, Charleston SC has plenty to offer visitors who need an air-conditioned break in their tourism schedule! Allow Carolina Limousine & Coach to present some of the more attractive Charleston indoor activities!
As we attempt to categorize your selection of Charleston’s air-conditioned indoor activities, one attraction stands alone: The South Carolina Aquarium. Part museum, part interactive learning experience, and all family fun, the Aquarium features a rich variety of local aquatic and amphibian life, including perennial favorites: sharks and alligators!
Visitors can tour the Dock Street Theater, an 18th-century building that still showcases the finest theater productions in the South. Charleston Music Hall offers a full schedule of musical performances by renowned national, regional, and local acts. And the North Charleston Performing Arts Center features the biggest national touring musical acts, comedians, and stage plays.
From the early Colonial times to the Pirate Age, the Revolution, Civil War, and Reconstruction, Charleston’s 350+ years have been documented and remarkably well preserved. Beat-the-heat highlights include the Charleston Museum, the Old Exchange and Provost, the Natural History Museum, and the Fire Museum in nearby North Charleston.
Students of Naval history will find ways to keep cool, as well. The Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, with its centerpiece the USS Yorktown, lies across the Harbor in Mount Pleasant. And the Confederate submarine Hunley is open for weekend tours.
Understanding the plantation system, the slave trade that sustained it, and the Civil War that ended it is an important part of discovering Lowcountry history, and Charleston doesn’t shy away from it. Visitors can tour the Old Slave Mart, a museum housed in a former slave auction house. Several mansions belonging to prominent Planter families are open for daily tours, including The Aiken-Rhett House, Calhoun Mansion, and Drayton Hall – all located in Historic Downtown Charleston. Note that the actual plantations are more hit-and-miss. The main house and interpretive center are usually air-conditioned, but the grounds and outbuildings will be less forgiving.
Cooling off from the inside is always a popular option, especially when you have the Lowcountry’s tempting variety of brewery, winery, and distillery tours! Pro Tip: let Carolina Limo be your designated driver!
These are just the highlights of the wide range of Charleston indoor activities that await you, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Some are within walking distance of your motel, while others require a bit of a drive. In those instances, may we suggest the climate-controlled comfort of a Carolina Limousine or Coach?
